Language Agency – Language Service Representative Independent Contractor

About Valley Community Interpreters (VCI)
Mission: VCI is committed to increasing and improving language services for the Limited English Proficient (LEP) communities of color and their service providers through two program areas:
The VCI Academy offers interpreter training four to five times per year focused on building an interpreter workforce in New Mexico skilled in cross-cultural communications to facilitate understanding between individuals who don’t share the same language.
The VCI Agency offers language services in interpretation (spoken languages) and translation (written language) from on-site, over the phone and online.

Independent Contractor – Scope of Work:

VCI is seeking a dynamic, experienced, self-directed, and motivated individual who is committed to promoting
language access in New Mexico. As an independent contractor, the Language Service Representative will be
responsible for securing contracts for language services, including written translations and interpretation services
(both over the phone and in person). Their primary role will be to engage with government agencies, non-profit
organizations, educational institutions, social services, and healthcare agencies to promote the work of VCI. They will work closely with VCI staff to identify opportunities and build relationships with potential clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and build relationships with potential clients in government, non-profit, educational, and health institutions in the public and private sectors to secure contracts for language access services
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for business development and community outreach efforts
  • Conduct market research to identify potential clients and trends in the language services industry
  • Collaborate with the language services team to develop proposals and respond to RFPs
  • Attend industry conferences and events to promote language access and develop relationships with potential clients
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of business development and outreach activities
  • Stay up-to-date on language access policies and regulations in relevant industries and jurisdictions

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, communications, marketing, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in business development, sales/marketing, community outreach
  • Experience working with government, non-profit, educational, and/or health institutions
  • Understands the language service industry and standards
  • Understanding of language access policies and regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to promoting language access in New Mexico
  • Excellent computer and software skills

This is an independent contractor role and not an employee. The successful candidate will have the opportunity
to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, helping to promote language access and make a positive impact
on communities across New Mexico.

Pay: This is an independent contractor role with a base contract amount of $50,000 plus commission. See
commission structure.

Commission Structure: The Contractor shall receive a commission of 10% on the total value of each executed
services contract, based on the percentage of actual services provided by the VCI Agency. The commission payment shall be calculated on a monthly basis, based on the actual services provided by VCI during that month. The commission payment shall be made within 30 days of receipt of payment from VCI client.
